Melissa Almaguer presents ¡alebrijes!

¡alebrijes! is a multimedia performance by Melissa Almaguer inspired by the Mexican folk art sculptures depicting fantastical, often hybrid creatures first imagined in the 1930s by artist Pedro Linares. Combining storytelling, animation, live music, field recordings and electronics, the performance explores the multiplicity of the self and challenges notions of identity as singular, fixed, and static. Through the journeys the alebrijes take us on, we are invited to consider identity as boundless and ever-transforming, and to reunite with those parts of ourselves we often leave unnoticed or avoid.

The Mercy Velvet Project Day 2

  • Yale Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies Blackbox (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Presented by kamrDANCE, Yale Schwarzman Center, and the International Festival of Arts and Ideas

Tickets available soon!

The 1999 album, Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet, exists on zero streaming platforms, and few people have heard it…until now. The Mercy Velvet Project (premiere June 2026) is an embodied re-creation of the album. The work explores what makes us human, our collective need for community to survive—with musicians and dancers moving as one. Through nine songs in their original order, a queer and femme cast explore different barriers to experiencing love. Learning that by giving and receiving the gift of mercy, we are able to find the bridge to survival, wholeness, and hope. Over twenty-five years after the albums’ release, kamrDANCE and their collaborators expand upon its legacy through their personal identities and today’s political realities. The show tells the story of the album through tap dance as percussion, contemporary dance, original text, and instrumentation via bass, guitar, vocals, and electronics—highlighting our vulnerabilities, learning together how to find the antidote that is mercy, and in turn lead meaningful lives.

Live in Vain by Mercy Velvet is the music that Choreographer Alexis Robbins grew up with, the percussive rhythms and lyrics that inspired living room dances. Her father, Mark Robbins, was the drummer and co-composer for Mercy Velvet, alongside lyricist and vocalist Deb Lili, and guitarist Lou Lili. Her fathers’ love and direction has deeply influenced the music Alexis listens to and the music she creates as a tap dancer. Now, Alexis, Musical Director Christie Echols, and their collaborators bring Live in Vain to audiences for the first time.

Created by New Orleans-born vocalist Kay Lewis and her mother Leila Lewis, this immersive theatrical concert celebrates the sound, style, and soul of legends like Lena Horne, Billie Holiday, Eartha Kitt, and Dorothy Dandridge- not through imitation but through bold, evocative reinterpretation. National Tap Dance Day Celebration @ The Jazz Gallery

Tap Performances by Star Dixon, Nicholas Van Young, Christina Carminucci, Caleb Lawrence Jackson, Audrey Chapin, Toru Sakuragi, Caroline Brodie

Ft. Miki Yamanaka (piano), Simon Moullier (vibraphone) Gervis Myles (bass) and Buz Donald (drums)

This special performance celebrates National Tap Dance Day, honoring the birthday of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson on May 25. Robinson was one of the most influential figures in the history of tap dance, known for bringing the art form to a broader stage and elevating it with elegance, musicality, and innovation. Tap Dance Day was officially recognized in the United States in 1989, thanks in large part to the efforts of Gregory Hines, acknowledging tap as a vital part of American cultural heritage.

Our show celebrates that legacy with tap dancers from New York City and Chicago—two cities deeply rooted in the evolution of tap. Joined by a live jazz band, the performance highlights the deep history and shared improvisational spirit of tap and jazz.

General Seating $33.50 ($22.50 for members; $17 for student members)
Cabaret Seating $45 ($25 for members)
Livestream $22.50 ($7.50 for members)
